Bunting and banner sizes at a glance

Malaysian printers quote bunting and banners in feet, but the artwork is set up in millimetres or pixels. This table gives all three. Pixel sizes are at 150 dpi, which is enough for anything read from a metre away.

Type Size (ft) Size (cm / mm) Design at (150 dpi) Typical use
Standard bunting 2 x 5 ft 61 x 152 cm 3600 x 9000 px Shop front, pavement, entrance
Roll-up bunting About 2.8 x 6.6 ft 850 x 2000 mm 5020 x 11811 px Event booth, lobby, mall roadshow
X-stand bunting About 2 x 5.2 ft 600 x 1600 mm 3543 x 9449 px Indoor promotions, counters, short events
PVC banner Custom, for example 3 x 6 ft 91 x 183 cm 5400 x 10800 px Shop front, hoarding, fence, stage backdrop

The standard 2 x 5 ft bunting is the one most people mean when they say “bunting” in Malaysia: a tall print on a pole stand with a water or cement base. Roll-up and X-stand bunting are sold with their own stands, so the print must match the stand exactly. Wider roll-ups exist, but 850 x 2000 mm is the size most printers stock.

PVC banners have no fixed size. Printers charge by the square foot, so measure the wall, fence or frame first and design to that.

Resolution and bleed for print

A bunting is a large print viewed from a distance. Three settings decide whether it prints sharp.

  1. Document size. Set up the file at 100% of the printed size, for example 850 x 2000 mm for a roll-up. Working at a smaller scale is fine only if your printer asks for it.
  2. Resolution. 100 to 150 dpi at full size. A large banner viewed from across a road can drop to 100 dpi. Logos and text should be vector, so they stay sharp at any size.
  3. Bleed and hidden areas. Add the bleed your printer specifies, usually a few millimetres on each side. On a roll-up, the bottom of the print rolls into the base and is hidden, so keep text and logos well above it. Ask for the printer’s template, which marks the hidden zone.

PVC banners finished with eyelets or hemmed edges need a wider margin. Keep text at least 5 cm from every edge so the eyelets do not punch through it.

Pick a size for the venue

The right size depends on where the bunting stands and how close people get.

  • Shop front. A standard 2 x 5 ft bunting on the pavement catches people walking past. For a fascia or a fence, a PVC banner sized to the space reads from across the road.
  • Event booth. Booths at exhibitions are usually 3 x 3 m. One or two roll-ups at the back of the booth, plus a table display, is a common setup. Check the organiser’s rules on height before you print.
  • Mall roadshow. Malls often limit the number and height of standing displays. Roll-ups are the safe choice because they set up and pack down fast. Ask mall management for their guidelines first.
  • Counter or table. A tent card or small table bunting sits next to the cashier or on a booth table. Sizes vary by printer, so ask for their stock sizes.

A T-stand works like an X-stand but holds the print from a top bar. Stand designs vary between suppliers, so get the print size from the stand you are buying.

Reading distance and text size

People give a bunting two or three seconds. Design for that.

Reading distance Minimum letter height
1 to 2 m (walking past a booth) About 2.5 cm
3 m (across a walkway) About 2.5 to 3 cm
6 m (across a mall atrium) About 5 to 6 cm
15 m (across a road) About 12 to 15 cm

A common signage rule is about 2.5 cm of letter height for every 3 m of reading distance. Treat it as a minimum, not a target.

Keep a bunting to one message, one image, a logo and one call to action. Put the headline in the top third, at eye level. The bottom third of a roll-up sits near the floor, so do not put the offer there. A QR code works only if people can stand close enough to scan it, which suits booths more than shop fronts.

Materials

Material Best for Notes
PVC (flex) Outdoor banners, shop fronts, fences Weatherproof, takes eyelets, the cheapest per square foot
Synthetic paper Roll-ups and X-stands indoors Smooth, sharp print, stays flat in the stand
Canvas Premium indoor displays, backdrops Fabric texture, less glare under lights, costs more

Ask your printer for a sample of each. Materials and weights differ between print shops, and our print paper guide covers how finishes change the look.

E-banner and digital banner sizes

An e-banner is a banner for a screen, so it is measured in pixels, not feet. Design at these sizes:

Placement Size (px)
Website hero, full width 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 600
Instagram post, square / portrait 1080 x 1080 / 1080 x 1350
Instagram and Facebook story 1080 x 1920
Google display ad, medium rectangle 300 x 250
Google display ad, leaderboard 728 x 90
Google display ad, mobile banner 320 x 50

Export e-banners as RGB, in JPG or PNG. Platforms change their sizes from time to time, so check the platform’s help page before a large campaign.

Files to send the printer

  1. A print-ready PDF at full size, with bleed and crop marks if the printer asks for them.
  2. CMYK colour, with fonts converted to outlines or embedded.
  3. Photos at 100 to 150 dpi at the printed size.
  4. The size in feet or millimetres, the material and the quantity.
  5. Whether you need the stand, and for PVC banners, where the eyelets go.
  6. A proof approval before the full run.

If you are planning a full set of event materials, our brochure sizes and folds guide covers the handouts that go with a booth. For bunting, banner and e-banner design, see our marketing collaterals service or send the sizes and quantity through the quote form.

Questions clients ask before they hire us

What is the standard bunting size in Malaysia?

The standard bunting size is 2 x 5 ft, about 61 x 152 cm, printed on a flag-style stand with a weighted base. For a roll-up bunting the common size is 850 x 2000 mm, and for an X-stand it is 60 x 160 cm.

What is the standard bunting size in cm?

A 2 x 5 ft standard bunting is about 61 x 152 cm. A roll-up bunting is 85 x 200 cm and an X-stand is 60 x 160 cm. Always confirm the exact size against your printer's template, because stands from different suppliers vary by a few centimetres.

What resolution should a bunting design be?

Set up the file at the full printed size and keep photos at 100 to 150 dpi at that size. A bunting is read from a metre or more away, so 300 dpi is not needed and only makes the file very large. Logos and text should stay as vector.

What is the difference between a roll-up and an X-stand bunting?

A roll-up bunting retracts into an aluminium base, so it sets up in under a minute and protects the print in transport. An X-stand holds the print with four corner hooks on a folding frame. It is lighter and cheaper but less stable in wind or busy walkways.

What size is an e-banner for a website?

There is no single e-banner size. A full-width website hero is commonly designed at 1920 x 1080 px or 1920 x 600 px. Google display ads use fixed sizes such as 300 x 250 px and 728 x 90 px, and social platforms each publish their own sizes.

How much does bunting design cost?

O2O Creative designs bunting, banners and e-banners as part of our marketing collaterals service at RM300 to RM800 per piece, delivered in 3 to 10 days. Printing and the stand are quoted separately by the printer.
