Food packaging design in Malaysia: materials, labels and shelf appeal

Good food packaging in Malaysia protects the food, carries a compliant Bahasa Malaysia label and stands out on a crowded shelf, an online listing or a delivery bag. Choose the material for the food first, then design the label and front panel around it. O2O Creative in Petaling Jaya and Penang designs food packaging from RM2,500 to RM6,500 per SKU, in 3 to 6 weeks.

What food packaging has to do

A food pack has three jobs. It protects the food until it is eaten, it carries the information the law and the buyer need, and it sells the product against the packs next to it. Design starts with the first job, because the material decides the shape, print method and finish the other two have to work with.

Choose the material for the food

Start with four questions: does the food need protection from moisture, oil, air or light, how long must it last, how is it stored (ambient, chilled or frozen), and how is it sold (shelf, counter, online or delivery)?

Format Common material Suits
Folding carton Paperboard such as ivory board or art card Biscuits, cakes, tea, frozen food sleeves, gift sets
Stand-up pouch Laminated plastic film, sometimes with foil or metallised layer Snacks, coffee, dried fruit, sauces
Kraft bag or pouch Kraft paper, often with a lining Bakery, granola, coffee beans
Jar or bottle with label Glass or plastic container, sticker label Sambal, kaya, honey, drinks
Takeaway box or cup Paperboard or plastic, food-safe Restaurant and cafe orders, GrabFood
Shipping carton Corrugated board Outer cases, e-commerce boxes

Ask your packaging supplier for food-grade material and its documentation for your product. Barrier, grease resistance and freezer use are properties of the material, not the design, so confirm them before the artwork starts. For paper weights, coatings and finishes, see our print paper guide.

Plan the label before the front

The legal label decides how much space is left for branding. A food made in Malaysia needs its required particulars in Bahasa Malaysia, and many foods also need a nutrition panel and a date mark. Most local brands then add English and Chinese. On a small pouch, that can fill the entire back panel.

We lay out the information panel first, at the required letter sizes, and design the front around what remains. The rules themselves are in our packaging label requirements guide. If the product is halal certified, the logo rules are in our halal logo guide. Leave space for a barcode too, since most retailers ask for one.

Design for shelf appeal

Shoppers scan a shelf quickly. A pack that sells gives them the answer to three questions at a glance: what is it, which flavour or variant, and why this one.

  1. Brand and product name first. The largest text on the front should say what the product is, not a slogan.
  2. One clear flavour signal. Use a colour band, an ingredient photo or an illustration that changes per SKU, so a range reads as a family and each flavour is easy to find.
  3. Show the food honestly. A photo or illustration of the real product builds trust. If the photo shows garnish or sides that are not in the pack, mark it as a serving suggestion.
  4. Limit the claims. Pick one or two reasons to buy. Claims such as “no added sugar” or health benefits are regulated, so check them before printing.
  5. Test at real size. Print a mock-up, put it next to competitors and look from arm’s length. Then shrink the front to an online thumbnail and check it again.

Packaging box design

A box is a structure before it is a graphic. The printer or box maker supplies a dieline, the flat drawing of cuts and folds, and the artwork is built on it. Get the dieline for your exact dimensions before design starts, not after.

Step What happens
Structure Choose box style and size, request dieline from the printer
Layout Place the front, information panel, barcode and flaps on the dieline
Artwork Final graphics with bleed, in CMYK plus any Pantone colours
Mock-up Print and fold a sample to check panels and reading order
Printer proof Approve colour and position on the real board before the run

Common mistakes are text running over a fold, the barcode landing on a glued flap and the front panel facing the wrong way when the box is assembled. A folded mock-up catches all three.

Restaurants, cafes and delivery

For food and drink outlets, packaging is the part of the brand that leaves the shop. Takeaway boxes, cups, bags and stickers carry the logo into every GrabFood and foodpanda order. Keep the system simple: one logo stamp or sticker on stock packaging is often enough, with fully printed boxes kept for signature items. See our pages for restaurants and cafes. The cafe opening kit includes a cup and bag stamp.

For printed retail packs, see our snack packaging for D-Jack and soy dessert packaging for Soyalah.

Cost and timeline

Our packaging design fee is RM2,500 to RM6,500 per SKU, in 3 to 6 weeks. A label for an existing container sits at the low end. A new box structure with several flavours and three languages sits at the high end. Printing, dies and product photography are separate costs. Our packaging design cost guide explains what moves the price.

Questions clients ask before they hire us

How much does food packaging design cost in Malaysia?

O2O Creative charges RM2,500 to RM6,500 per SKU for packaging design, depending on whether the structure is new, how many languages the label carries and how many flavours share one layout. Printing and dies are quoted separately by the printer. Our packaging design cost guide breaks the range down.

What is the best packaging material for food?

It depends on the food. Dry snacks and coffee need a barrier against moisture and air, usually a laminated pouch. Oily food needs a grease-resistant surface. Chilled and frozen food needs material that holds up to condensation. Ask your packaging supplier for food-grade material suited to your product.

What must a food label show in Malaysia?

The name of the food, ingredients, allergens, net quantity and the maker's name and address, in Bahasa Malaysia for food made in Malaysia, with a date mark and nutrition panel for many foods. Our packaging label requirements guide lists each rule with its regulation number.

How long does food packaging design take?

Three to six weeks per SKU from brief to print-ready files. A label on an existing jar sits at the short end. A new box structure with several flavours, bilingual labels and a printer proof sits at the long end.

Can one design work for several flavours?

Yes, and it usually should. We design one layout and change a colour, an illustration or a flavour band per SKU. Shoppers see a range rather than unrelated packs, and each new flavour costs less to add.

Do I need different packaging for GrabFood and Shopee?

Often, yes. Delivery packaging needs leak resistance, a tamper seal and a logo visible on the bag. Online listings show the pack as a small thumbnail, so the product name and flavour must read at that size.
