Logo vs corporate identity vs branding: what's the difference?

In Malaysia, an agency logo costs RM2,000 to RM6,000, a corporate identity system RM3,000 to RM15,000 and a full rebrand with strategy RM15,000 to RM35,000, because each includes the one before it. The logo is the mark. Corporate identity is the system of colours, type and rules that applies it everywhere. Branding adds positioning and messaging.

The short answer

A logo is the mark: a symbol, a wordmark or both. Corporate identity is the system that makes the logo work everywhere: colour values, typefaces, layout rules, stationery and a guidelines document. Branding is the wider work of deciding how customers should see the business, including positioning, naming, tone of voice and messaging, then expressing it through the identity.

Each one contains the one before it. You can have a logo without an identity system, but not an identity system without a logo. You can have an identity without a brand strategy, but a brand strategy needs an identity to show up anywhere.

What a logo covers

A logo project gives you the mark itself and the files to use it. A good agency logo includes research into your customers and competitors, two or three concepts, refinement and a file set for print and screen. It does not tell anyone which colours, fonts or layouts go with it. Read our logo design cost guide for the detail.

What corporate identity adds

Corporate identity turns the logo into a system other people can follow. A typical scope includes:

  1. Colour palette with exact values for print (CMYK, Pantone) and screen (RGB, HEX).
  2. Typefaces for headings and body text, including Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese if you use them.
  3. Stationery: business cards, letterhead, envelopes and email signature.
  4. Templates for documents, presentations and social media posts.
  5. Brand guidelines that show the correct and incorrect use of every element.

This is what keeps your signage, uniforms, delivery boxes, Shopee store and company profile consistent when different printers and staff produce them. See our corporate identity service.

What branding adds

Branding starts before design. It answers who the business is for, what it stands for and how it should sound. The work includes customer and competitor research, a positioning statement, key messages, tone of voice and sometimes naming. The identity system then expresses those decisions visually.

SMEs often do not need a full branding project at launch. It becomes worth the money when the business has outgrown its original image, is entering a new market or is merging with another company.

How to decide

  1. Starting out with a tight budget: a well-made logo, with the files you need, is enough for now. Plan the identity later.
  2. Growing, with staff and suppliers producing material: invest in corporate identity. Inconsistent material costs you credibility in tenders and with distributors.
  3. Launching packaged products: design the identity and packaging together, so the system is built for the shelf.
  4. Repositioning or rebranding an established company: do the branding work first, then the identity.

If you are not sure which one you need, describe your business, where your logo appears today and what is not working. We will tell you which scope fits. Send it through the quote form or read more about our corporate identity service.

Questions clients ask before they hire us

Is a logo the same as a brand?

No. The logo is one mark. The brand is what customers think of your business, shaped by the logo, the identity system, your messaging and every experience they have with you.

Do I need corporate identity if I already have a logo?

You need it once more than one person or supplier produces material for you. Without colour values, typefaces and usage rules, your signage, packaging and social posts drift apart. An SME identity system costs RM3,000 to RM8,000 at the simpler end.

How long does a corporate identity project take?

A logo takes 2 to 4 weeks. A corporate identity system covering up to about 30 items takes 6 to 8 weeks. O2O Creative works to the same 6 to 8 week timeline.

What does O2O Creative charge for corporate identity?

O2O Creative charges RM5,000 to RM15,000 for corporate identity and RM2,000 to RM6,000 for a logo on its own. Every quotation states whether 8% SST applies.
