When to rebrand: signs, costs and process
Rebrand when your brand identity no longer matches the business: you have moved upmarket, merged, entered new markets, or customers confuse you with competitors. In Malaysia, a refreshed identity system costs RM3,000 to RM8,000 and a full SME rebrand with strategy RM15,000 to RM35,000. O2O Creative charges RM5,000 to RM15,000 for corporate identity, over 6 to 8 weeks.

Signs it is time to rebrand
A rebrand costs money and some recognition, so it needs a business reason. These are the common ones.
| Sign | What it looks like | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| You have moved upmarket | Prices and service have improved, but the logo and packaging still look like a budget brand | Rebrand or refresh |
| Customers confuse you with a competitor | Similar name, colours or logo in the same area or category | Rebrand, often with a new name |
| You have merged or acquired | Two names, two logos, unclear which leads | Rebrand with a brand structure |
| You have outgrown the name | A name tied to one town or one product, when you now sell nationwide or across several lines | Rebrand or add a parent brand |
| Your material looks inconsistent | Every signboard, flyer and post looks different | Corporate identity system |
| The logo fails in use | Unreadable on an app icon, cannot be embroidered, breaks in one colour | Refresh |
| You are entering tenders or export | Buyers, procurement teams or distributors expect a professional identity | Refresh or rebrand |
| A legal problem | Someone else holds the trademark | Rebrand |
If your only problems are inconsistent material or a logo that fails in use, a refresh or an identity system is often enough.
Reasons that are not enough on their own
- You are bored of the logo. You see it every day. Your customers do not.
- A new manager wants a change. Ask what business problem it solves first.
- Sales are down. If the cause is price, product or location, a new logo will not fix it.
Refresh, identity system or full rebrand
Not every brand problem needs a full rebrand. The scope options are:
| Scope | What changes | What stays |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh | Colours, type, layouts, templates, a cleaner version of the logo | Name, core of the logo |
| Corporate identity system | Full rules for how the brand appears on every item, often with a redrawn logo | Name, usually the positioning |
| Full rebrand | Positioning, messaging, possibly the name, a new logo and the full identity system | Your business and your customers |
The difference between a logo, a corporate identity system and branding is explained in our guide to logo vs corporate identity vs branding.
Rebranding costs in Malaysia
| Scope | Typical price |
|---|---|
| SME identity system (logo, colours, type, guidelines) | RM3,000 to RM8,000 |
| Identity plus packaging, social templates or a deck | RM8,000 to RM20,000 |
| Full SME rebrand with strategy | RM15,000 to RM35,000 |
| Corporate rebrand | RM50,000+ |
| Holding group rebrand | RM100,000+ |
These bands come from Malaysian branding cost guides published in 2026, including Jumix Design’s. O2O Creative charges RM5,000 to RM15,000 for corporate identity and RM2,000 to RM6,000 for a logo on its own. Every quotation states whether 8% SST applies.
The design fee is often not the largest cost. Budget separately for:
- Signage. Shopfront, directional and vehicle signs, and any local council approval for a new signboard.
- Packaging. New artwork for every SKU, and stock of old packaging to use up or write off.
- Print. Name cards, letterheads, forms, brochures and uniforms.
- Digital. Website, social media profiles, marketplace listings and email signatures.
- Legal and registration. A new trademark application with MyIPO, and SSM changes if the company or business name changes.
The rebrand process
1. Audit what you have
List every place the brand appears: signboards, packaging, vehicles, uniforms, website, Shopee and Lazada stores, GrabFood, Google Business Profile, forms and contracts. This list sets the rollout budget.
2. Decide what to keep
Ask a few loyal customers what they recognise you by. If it is the colour, keep the colour. If it is the name, keep the name and change the rest. Keeping one familiar element protects the recognition you have built.
3. Set the positioning
Write down who you sell to, why they choose you over the competition, and how you want to be described. The design is judged against this, not against personal taste.
4. Check names and trademarks
If the name changes, check it with SSM and search the MyIPO register before any design starts. Our guides to the SSM name check and registering a logo as a trademark cover both steps.
5. Design the identity
Logo, colours, typefaces, photography style and the rules that tie them together, tested on real items: a signboard, a pack, a social post, an invoice. At O2O Creative this takes 6 to 8 weeks for a corporate identity project.
6. Roll out in order
Change the items customers see most first: signage, packaging, website and online listings. Switch digital profiles on the same day so customers searching for you find one consistent brand. Let old printed stock run out where it is not customer-facing.
7. Tell people
Tell existing customers, suppliers and distributors before the switch, with a short reason. A message such as “same team, same products, new look” prevents confusion at the counter and on WhatsApp.

Questions clients ask before they hire us
What is the difference between a rebrand and a refresh?
A refresh keeps the name and the core of the logo and updates colours, type, layouts and templates. A rebrand can change the name, the logo, the positioning and the messaging. A refresh costs less and keeps the recognition you have already built.
How much does rebranding cost in Malaysia?
An SME identity system costs about RM3,000 to RM8,000 and a full SME rebrand with strategy RM15,000 to RM35,000. Corporate and holding group rebrands start at RM50,000 and RM100,000. Printing, signage and website changes are extra.
How long does a rebrand take?
The identity design takes 6 to 8 weeks at O2O Creative. Rolling it out across signage, packaging, uniforms, vehicles and the website takes longer, because each item has its own supplier and lead time.
Will rebranding lose my existing customers?
It can, if customers cannot recognise you. Keep at least one familiar element, such as the colour or the symbol, tell existing customers before the switch, and update Google Business Profile, Shopee, Lazada and GrabFood listings on the same day.
Do I need a new trademark after rebranding?
Usually yes. A trademark protects the mark as filed, so a new logo or name needs a new MyIPO application. Search the register before you approve the new design.
