Flyer design in Malaysia: sizes, layout ideas and a print checklist
Good flyer design carries one message: a clear headline, one offer, a reason to trust you and one call to action, usually a WhatsApp number or QR code. Most Malaysian SME flyers are A5 (148 x 210 mm) or A4, set up with 3 mm bleed. O2O Creative in Petaling Jaya and Penang designs flyers for RM300 to RM800 per piece, in 3 to 10 days.

One flyer, one message
A flyer gets a few seconds of attention, whether it lands in a mailbox in Subang Jaya or sits on a counter in Georgetown. In that time the reader needs to understand one thing and know what to do next. Flyers fail when they try to say everything at once.
Pick the single job the flyer must do. Fill seats at an opening weekend, sell a Raya set menu, book trial classes, or bring people to a property viewing. Everything on the flyer should serve that job.
The layout: headline, offer, proof, call to action
Most effective flyer design ideas follow the same order of reading. Set the sizes so the eye moves down the page in this sequence.
- Headline. What this is and who it is for, in about six to ten words. “New tuition centre in Bukit Mertajam” beats “Welcome”.
- Offer. The reason to act now: a price, a free trial, a discount or an opening date. Make it the biggest number on the page.
- Proof. One reason to trust you: a photo of the real product or premises, years in business, or certifications such as halal where they apply.
- Call to action. One clear next step, usually “WhatsApp us” or “Scan to book”, with the number or QR code large enough to use.
For a food flyer design, the photo often does the job of the headline. Use one strong photo of your best-selling dish rather than a grid of twelve small ones, and put the price next to it.
What to put on a Malaysian flyer
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp number | Customers can message you straight away. Use a wa.me link in the QR code too. |
| QR code | Leads to a booking page, menu, catalogue or WhatsApp chat. Print it at least about 2 cm wide and test it on the printed proof. |
| Address and landmark | Add a Waze or Google Maps QR or a nearby landmark. Many shops are hard to find from the street address alone. |
| Validity date | “Valid until 30 November” stops disputes and gives a reason to act now. |
| Registered business name | Your SSM-registered name, and the registration number if you show it, so customers can check who you are. |
| Logo and brand colours | So the flyer matches your shopfront, banner and social posts. |
Keep social media handles to one line, so the reader is not asked to choose between five.
Flyer sizes and uses
Malaysian printers use the ISO A sizes. Choose the size from where the flyer will be read.
| Size | Trim size | Artwork with 3 mm bleed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 x 297 mm | 216 x 303 mm | Menus, price lists, notice boards, flyers with a map |
| A5 | 148 x 210 mm | 154 x 216 mm | Mailbox drops, handouts, event flyers, the most common choice |
| DL | 99 x 210 mm | 105 x 216 mm | Counter racks, envelope inserts, slim promotions |
| A6 | 105 x 148 mm | 111 x 154 mm | Bag inserts, delivery order inserts, vouchers |
If you need more content than one A4 side can hold, the job is probably a brochure. See our guide to brochure sizes and folds. For roadside and shopfront formats, see bunting and banner sizes.
Print file setup
Most reprints come from the file, not the design. Before the file goes to the printer, check the following.
- The document is the trim size with 3 mm bleed on every edge, so backgrounds run off the page.
- Text, logos and QR codes sit at least 3 to 5 mm inside the trim.
- Colours are CMYK, and photos are about 300 dpi at the printed size.
- Fonts are outlined or embedded in a print PDF.
- You have checked a printer’s proof, including scanning the QR code, before the full run.
Paper choices
Most flyers in Malaysia print on art paper of 105 to 157gsm. Lighter paper keeps the cost down for large mailbox drops. Heavier paper feels more solid for a flyer that sits on a counter or goes into a customer’s bag. Gloss suits photo-heavy food and retail flyers, and matt is easier to read under shop lighting. Our print paper guide compares GSM and finishes in more detail.
Bilingual flyers
Many Malaysian flyers need English with Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese. Malay copy often runs longer than English, and Chinese needs its own typeface and line spacing, so plan the space before writing. Put the headline and offer in both languages and the small print in one. For three languages, print separate versions or use the back of the flyer, rather than shrinking everything to fit one side.
Print flyer vs social media version
The same campaign usually runs on paper and on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Reuse the key visual, but redesign the layout for a phone screen.
| Version | Size | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Print flyer | A5 or A4 with 3 mm bleed, CMYK | Full details, address, validity date, small print |
| Feed post | 1080 x 1350 px (4:5) or 1080 x 1080 px | Headline, offer and photo only, larger text |
| Story or WhatsApp Status | 1080 x 1920 px (9:16) | Keep text away from the top and bottom, where the app’s own buttons sit |
A photo of a printed A5 flyer posted on Instagram is hard to read. A separate digital version costs little extra when it is designed with the print file.
Distribution and tracking response
Where the flyer goes changes how it should look.
- Mailbox drops. Check whether the condominium or taman management allows them. The headline must work when the flyer is folded or half pulled out of a letterbox.
- Counters and partner shops. A DL or A6 card on a counter rack needs the offer at the top, where the rack does not cover it.
- Events and roadshows. People take a flyer and read it later, so the WhatsApp number and validity date matter more than the headline.
To see what worked, give each batch something you can count. Use a QR code with its own link for each area, a promo code such as “PJ10” that customers mention at the counter, or a pre-filled WhatsApp message. Count the responses against the number of flyers distributed, and print more of what works.
Flyer design checklist
- One message and one offer.
- A headline readable from arm’s length.
- One call to action with a WhatsApp number or QR code.
- Address or map link, validity date and registered business name.
- The right size for where it will be read, with 3 mm bleed.
- CMYK, 300 dpi photos and a checked proof.
- A social version sized for feed and story.
- A QR code or promo code to count responses.

Questions clients ask before they hire us
What size should a flyer be in Malaysia?
A5 (148 x 210 mm) is the most common size for handouts and mailbox drops. Use A4 (210 x 297 mm) when you need a menu, price list or map, and DL (99 x 210 mm) or A6 (105 x 148 mm) for counter cards and bag inserts. Add 3 mm bleed on every edge for print.
What should I put on a business flyer?
A headline, one offer, a reason to trust you, and one call to action. Add your WhatsApp number, a QR code, your address or Waze link, the offer's validity date and your registered business name. Leave out anything that does not help the reader act on this one offer.
Should my flyer be in English, Malay or Chinese?
Use the language your customers read. In mixed areas a bilingual flyer works well, with the headline and offer in both languages and the small print in one. If you need three languages, print separate versions rather than squeezing all three onto one A5 sheet.
Can I use the same design for print and social media?
Use the same key visual, but not the same file. A print flyer has small text and a portrait A-size shape that becomes unreadable on a phone. Make a separate 1080 x 1350 px feed version and a 1080 x 1920 px story version with fewer words and larger type.
How do I know if my flyer worked?
Give each flyer a way to be counted. Use a QR code with its own link, a promo code customers say or type at checkout, or a separate WhatsApp greeting message. Count the responses against the number of flyers you distributed in each area.
How much does flyer design cost in Malaysia?
O2O Creative charges RM300 to RM800 per piece and delivers in 3 to 10 days. In the wider market, freelancers charge about RM80 to RM300 for a flyer and agencies RM300 to RM800 or more. Printing is quoted separately by your printer.
